Jacob (Israel)
(fl. ?19th-16th cent BCE)
   Israelite, son of Isaac and Rebekah. He bought the birthright of his brother Esau in exchange for food when Esau was faint with hunger, and later succeeded in securing the blessing Isaac intended to bestow on Esau. Fearing his brother's anger, Jacob left home and went to Haran, where he married Rachel and Leah, the daughters of his uncle Laban; by them and their handmaids Bilhah and Zilpah he had 12 sons and a daughter. After many years he made his way back to Canaan; during the journey he wrestled with an angel at a ford on the river Jabbok. In his old age, during a time of famine in Canaan, he was reunited with his son Joseph, who had been sold into slavery by his brothers and had become Pharaoh's chief minister in Egypt (Genesis 25-50).
